The 2012 individual Quality of Life award will be presented to Timothy S. Shaver, MD for his work with the Arthritis Foundation of Kansas and his dedication to educating other physicians about patient care beyond those in his own practice. Dr. Shaver has served as the moderator and chair of the annual Rheumatology Symposium for Health Care Professionals in Wichita, with his leadership the symposium has been able to attract many of the nation’s most noted and respected authorities to Wichita. Along with his practice and his work with the Arthritis Foundation he regularly volunteers with the Good Samaritan Clinic, a ministry of World Impact serving the medically indigent.
The 2012 community group Quality of Life award will be presented to the Wesley Medical Center (WMC) Neonatal Special Nurseries Family Advisory Council (FAC). The FAC is a very special group of volunteers, mostly comprised of parents and grandparents of babies who have experience with their own children being patients in the neonatal intensive care unit at WMC. The volunteers provide one on one support and counseling for families currently in the unit and work along with the staff to develop ‘patient friendly’ practices which encourage staff to understand what things can be changed to make the neonatal care unit experience better for all involved, but especially the babies and the parents.
